Final Assignment

As the final assignment, you will analyze one text of each type that you yourselves will find from an authentic source (e.g. newspaper, magazine), hence 1 news report, 1 caption, 1 advertisement, 1 review.

You will analyze each text in terms of (1) the social function, (2) text structure, and (3) lexicogrammatical features.

Finally, summarize the analysis of each text type in the form of a short report.

Passenger Plane Crashes On Take Off in Northern Mexico

Durango | Wed, August 1, 2018 | 06:01 am

Dozens of people were injured as an airliner crashed on takeoff during a heavy hail storm in northern Mexico, engulfing the plane in flames, the airline and passengers said Tuesday.

Passengers said there had been "a strange movement" on takeoff and "that was when the accident happened," Durango Governor Jose Rosas told the Milenio television channel.

Dozens of lightly injured passengers left the plane, which was engulfed in gray smoke in a field. Witnesses said there were "about 80 injured."

The plane carrying 97 passengers and four crew heading from Durango to the capital Mexico City, "crashed on take off" around 4:00 pm (2100 GMT), the country's Transport Minister Gerardo Ruiz Esparza said on Twitter.

Emergency services, the army and the Red Cross were on the scene.

Aeromexico said it was "working to verify the information and gather details."

The first images of the crash site shared on social and Mexican media showed a plane partially immersed in flames.

"I pray that the crew and all the passengers are OK," said Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto.

4. REVIEW

The Lord of the Rings is a fairy-tale of myth and fantasy. Peter Jackson directed a film that was considered, for a very long time, impossible to make, and not only for technical reasons. The narrative roots are incredibly long and detailed, and the storyline is deeply connected with the creation of a fantastic continent from a time unknown called `Middle Earth'. Its author, Tolkien, dedicated a considerable part of his life developing this continent's background, its mythology and origins, its different kinds of people, cultures and languages, and therefore its geographic references are determinant to the unfolding of the story of the One Ring.

An ancient Ring thought lost for centuries has been found, and through a strange twist in fate has been given to a small Hobbit named Frodo. When Gandalf discovers the Ring is in fact the One Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron, Frodo must make an epic quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it! However he does not go alone. He is joined by Gandalf, Legolasthe elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Aragorn, Boromir and his three Hobbit friends Merry, Pippin and Samwise. Through mountains, snow, darkness, forests, rivers and plains, facing evil and danger at every corner the Fellowship of the Ring must go. Their quest to destroy the One Ring is the only hope for the end of the Dark Lords reign.

The greatest thing about this film, to me, is that it brought me back to a time when I was in love with a different world where everything was possible. Reading The Lord of the Rings night after night, I came to understand what this thing of `mankind' really was all about. This film could capture that magic, and be a new bearer to its message of humanism, is a statement to its greatness. Gandalf's words, that even the smallest person may change the course of the world, and have a part to play in the destiny of all, are immortal.

In the end, this is a wonderful film, but that doesn't mean you are going to like it. I cannot tell you what it is like to see this film if you don't know or love the book. But I hope it may plant a seed on your heart to discover a great world of fantasy, beauty and humanity. I believe Tolkien would have liked that.

Summary

            News reports are found in newspapers and their purpose is to inform readers of what is happening in the world around them. The social function of news report is to inform the target readers, listeners, and viewers about events which are considered important and relevant to them by summarizing the event by mentioning only the important points in first paragraph and tells the events in details by providing the details of the important points, as stated by the sources such as authority, source person, witness. In order to have a good news report, we should use telegraphic information about story captured in headline, direct and indirect sentences to report the events according to witness(es) and the source person and use past tenses. Using prepositional phrases to state the circumstances briefly will help the readers understand the news. Using clause will make our sentence in news report will be more attractive.

            As a text, the caption is used to explain or elaborate on published photograph, by describing the photograph, giving context, or relating it to the article. This can make the article more interesting to read. A good caption must be regarded by the process of the event briefly, the participants in the process and to make it easy understood we should put the circumstances of the process: mostly of place and time, providing context to the picture by using complete sentences and use of Simple Present Tense in the main sentence, Simple Past Tense in the following sentences.

            Advertisement is a short interesting functional text. The Social Function of this text is to persuade listeners or readers to buy or to use the product or services being advertised or to convince products, services, or events to the public. A good ad should be clear in a purpose which built the advertisement, product names and the target readers. Besides, Coinage will make ad more interesting because coined words make lively and eye-catching. Comparative and Superlative Adjective will also make ad more convincing, while compound word will gives the readers a sense of closeness. To have a good command so the reader will be interested, we have to use Imperative Sentence and Disjunctive Clause.

            The way to express our opinion of film, novel, and other product is to review it. Review is an appreciation or an evaluation of a publication, such as a movie, book, novel, etc. which contains the orientation/introduction paragraph as its background to tell the products. Concluding statement, opinion, recommendation should be the next paragraph which called Evaluation by telling the chronology or characteristic of the product, film, music, or novel. To state our opinion, it must be at the last paragraph because it could be the conclusion for our opinion of the product, film, movie, novel or music.
